Santa Fe to Taos
From Santa Fe to Taos: Following the High Road
September 23 – 28
Santa Fe, Cordova, Truchas, Taos
Film or Digital
There’s a reason Santa Fe has inspired the likes of Georgia O’Keeffe, Ansel Adams, and Paul Strand to capture its beauty in oils or on film. The magical light, surreal landscapes, cultural richness and feeling of possibility provide a setting like no other for finding your vision and exploring your passion.
Using Santa Fe as your base for daily photographic adventures, Alan Ross will introduce you to places favored by these legendary artists, from the history and architecture of Canyon Road to the stunning simplicity of Taos Pueblo. You’ll also visit some of the quaint, historic villages along the High Road to Taos, the cliff dwellings of Bandelier and the rockscapes in Abiquiu.
Alan’s studio will be available for printing demonstrations, developing film, scanning negatives, downloading images and evening critiques. A group dinner in Alan’s Santa Fe home will start and conclude the workshop.
During this inspirational week, you will learn to isolate and evaluate the elements of a scene, translate the literal to the expressive, and use optics and exposure to best effect.
Demonstrations, practice sessions and critique will lay the foundation for individual photographic advancement.
Among the important concepts and techniques covered:
- How equipment choice impacts your final image
- Choosing a lens and using it well
- Optics and exposure
- Filters—when and how to use them
- Evaluating a scene and managing the details
- Tonality
- Translating what’s in front of you to what’s in your mind’s eye
Evenings will be s pent discussing the opportunities and challenges of the day, and in engaging discussions about identifying and expressing personal vision.
You are encouraged to bring prints or digital files for critique sessions that will be ongoing throughout the week.
By the end of the workshop, you will have the tools and methodology you need to respond to your vision with skill and confidence.
