FROM THE FOLKLORIC TO THE MYSTICAL:
A VISUAL EXPLORATION OF BULGARIA AND NORTHERN GREECE
JANUARY 22 - FEBRUARY 1, 2026

Overview

Founded in the 7th century, Bulgaria is one of the oldest states on the European continent. Remarkable for its varied scenery, unique folkloric traditions and a mix of Eastern and Western cultures, it offers a rich visual tapestry perfect for a one-of-a-kind photo adventure.

Just across the border is Northern Greece, a region that stretches across more cultures and terrain than any other region of Greece. Any number of ancient and mighty civilizations have left traces here, from the Macedonians to the Romans, Byzantines, Slavs and Turks.

Join us for 9 days and 10 nights as we explore these magical places. We’ll experience everything from unique festivals to ancient stone villages to 12th century monasteries that seem to rise out of the mist from the towering rocks upon which they were built.

Our travels begin in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Our first adventure will be to the nearby village of Pernik, where we’ll experience first-hand one of the most fascinating folkloric traditions in Bulgaria…the Kukeri Festival. Thousands of people from across the country and beyond put on traditional, if sometimes scary, masks and costumes that are though to chase away evil spirits and bring good fortune in the coming year.

After immersing ourselves in this amazing blend of color, sound and tradition, we’ll head to the smallest city in Bulgaria, Melnik, known for its architectural reserve and the impressive natural sand pyramids spread throughout the area.

We leave Bulgaria for Northern Greece and the charming town of Ioannina, the Zagori region and the impressive Vikos Gorge, before arriving in Meteora to explore its incredible monasteries.

As we make our way back to Sofia, we’ll have an opportunity to visit a site where the father and son of Alexander the Great are buries, as well as a lake that is home to a large population of Dalmation pelicans. Our final stop before reaching Sofia is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rila Monastery.

Every day will be packed with photographic opportunities, from the locals going about their daily lives to picturesque landscapes to interesting architecture. Master photographer and educator Alan Ross will be by your side the entire way, helping you providing photographic know-how and expertise in a light-hearted and supportive environment. Whatever your style or format, Alan is dedicated to helping you merge your vision, passion and craft to create images that most articulately reflect your experience.
